Children begin to recognize colours from a very young age, and by 18 months, they are ready to start learning this exciting new concept. Even if your little one isn’t speaking yet, they can start identifying colours by pointing to them. Learning colours is a vital milestone in cognitive development, as it helps build connections between what they see and the words they will soon learn to say.
Here’s a simple and fun DIY activity to help teach your child colours while enjoying some creative play.
What You’ll Need:
- Recycled toilet rolls
- Brightly coloured spray paints
- Braai tongs
- Newspaper
How to Set Up:
- Lay the newspaper flat to protect your surface before painting.
- Use the braai tongs to hold each toilet roll securely. This way, you can spray the whole roll without getting paint on your hands.
- Spray paint each toilet roll in a different colour. Once done, stand them up on the newspaper and let them dry. Spray paint dries quickly, so you won’t have to wait long!
Time for a Colour Hunt!
Once the rolls are dry, the real fun begins! Let your toddler pick one coloured toilet roll and head out on a colour hunt. This can be around your home, during a neighbourhood walk, or even on a drive. Encourage your child to match their coloured toilet roll to objects around them in the same colour. You can make it extra exciting by hunting for colours in clothing cupboards, toy bins, or even while reading a book together.
Why This Activity is Important:
- Colour Recognition: Helps your child learn the names of colours like red, blue, green, and orange.
- Focus and Scanning: Promotes the use of eye muscles as they search for matching colours.
- Creativity and Exploration: Engages their curiosity and encourages exploratory play.
- Hand-Eye Coordination: Improves fine motor skills as they handle and match objects.
This activity not only makes learning colours fun but also fosters important developmental skills. Enjoy this time of discovery with your little one!
